Patent Agent/Counsel/Technical Writer

Overview: 

AVS’ Patent Agent/Counsel/Technical Writer is responsible for drafting technical descriptions for patent applications in the field of medical devices. This position entails working with the engineering teams to gather information on their inventions and with AVS’ external IP and Patent attorneys.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Responsible for drafting detailed descriptions of inventions which form the basis for patents.
• Work cross-collaboratively with R&D to identify patentable inventions and ensure product documentation is technically accurate.
• Review and understand existing patent coverage and advise on the patentability of potential inventions.
• Create strong IP strategies to include patent protection/freedom to operate going forward to support new device features.
• Review new competitor R&D efforts, new product offerings, patents and patent watches, and their risk/impact on R&D efforts. As needed, consult with R&D teams and Legal on competitive patent oppositions that may affect the business.
• Partner with R&D team on development activities to ensure patent landscaping is accounted for
• Collaborate often with corporate patent attorney(s) to review ongoing design and to discuss patentability (strategize new patent applications.)

Skills and Experience

• BS/BA degree required, Engineering and/or Sciences. JD preferred
• 6 years minimum of experience in technical and/or scientific documentation to support patents or the patent process for Medical Devices.
• Knowledge of patent law
• Ability to use precise, consistent language to produce detailed descriptions of inventions
• Ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple application drafts in parallel, and complete projects in a timely manner.
